Five ZHA/ZHD pieces named finalists for SBID Product Design Awards 2020

Five projects by Zaha Hadid Architects & Zaha Hadid Design has been named finalist for the 2020 Society of British Interior Designers (SBID) Product Design Awards: RE/Form carpet collection for Royal Thai in the floor coverings category; LOOP for L-Acoustics in the Sound & Vision category; Volta bench for Citco in the outdoor category; Hew Tray in the accessories category and the Mew Coffee Table for Sawaya and Moroni in the Residential Furniture category.

The SBID Product Design Awards celebrate the finest design, innovation and functionality for products within the interior design sector.

RE/Form carpet collection by Zaha Hadid Design continues Royal Thai’s design-driven direction. The collection consists of 22 designs, inspired by four themes that feature prominently in Zaha Hadid’s work: striated lines, ribbonlike projections, pixelated landscapes and organic cellular shapes. Patterns within each grouping capture Hadid’s signature use of interweaving, layering and play with light and shadow.

Originally created for professional venues, L-Acoustics’ audio solutions have been reconfigured as the Island, a personal auditorium with a multichannel platform. The Island’s signature edition – LOOP – is the first collaboration between L-Acoustics Creations and Zaha Hadid Virtual Reality Group (ZHVR). LOOP marries the highest resolution audio of L-Acoustics’ Immersive Sound Art (L-ISA) with ZHA’s signature design language. ZHVR has drawn inspiration from natural forms and contemporary engineering to define LOOP’s curvilinear geometries which seamlessly incorporate L-Acoustics` technology. A ZHVR pilot project, LOOP’s design process involved VR workflow developed by the group; from initial sketches using immersive modelling software to mixed reality simulations allowing evaluation of the design’s ergonomics and materiality.

Echoing Hadid’s calligraphic language, Volta is defined by a single dynamic gesture. The intertwined loop is articulated through a smooth transition between hard-edged surfaces and soft, fluid, lines describing the item’s function while ensuring stability to the overall design. Immaculately carved from a single block of granite, Volta combines ZHD’s seamless lines with Citco’s exquisite craftsmanship.

The Hew tray is described through a series of subtle movements; from the gently upturned surface edge to the undulating base which peels away to reveal a dual purpose – voids for carrying, and dips for resting. This dynamism is further expressed through the contrasting colours of the powder-coated finish on the surface and base.

Continuing the investigation into the relationship between surface and structure evident throughout Hadid’s repertoire, the Mew Coffee Table is defined by surfaces converging at different heights.

The design explores the meeting point of planes that curve from the horizontal of the tabletop to become structure. Mew Coffee Table is available in two different colours, red and white, with a polished finish.

Public voting is open until 30 September 2020.
